The Penny Library of Famous Books No. 49
"Christmas Books by Charles Dickens"
Here's a fun little piece of ephemera from circa 1896-1899: "Christmas Books by Charles Dickens," number 49 in "The Penny Library of Famous Books" published by George Newnes Limited.
Of course, when one sees "Christmas" and "Charles Dickens," one thinks of "A Christmas Carol" and, indeed, that's one of the stories included!
I like the illustration on the cover, which appears to be Fred talking with Scrooge while Bob Cratchit looks on. That's not a scene we commonly see illustrated and it's an interesting choice as an attempt to catch the eye of the prospective buyer.
Fun!
