Of Pocket Books and Whatnot...

While thinking about the edition of "A Christmas Carol" published in 1939, I was reminded that one of those stray trivia things it seems like I've always known is that the first Pocket Book to be released was "Lost Horizon" by James Hilton. Haven't had much practical use for that fact until now, I guess!

And, of course, the star of the classic 1937 movie version of "Lost Horizon" was Ronald Colman. It's been a couple of days since I last mentioned Ronald Colman, so there we go!

Here's a nice-looking trailer for a theatrical reissue:

And for even more fun, here's Ronald Colman starring in an adaptation of "Lost Horizon" recorded for Decca Records in 1944:

Interesting to note that this is an adaptation of the book, not the movie per se.

This 78 rpm album was a follow-up Decca's earlier recording of "A Christmas Carol" from 1941. I may have mentioned that one once or twice!

A bit more trivia: the kangaroo's name is Gertrude!

"A Christmas Carol" - Pocket Books (1939)

"A Christmas Carol" (1939)
Pocket Books
Illustrator: Julian Brazelton

A few years after Uncle Toby, Julian Brazelton was back with a few more illustrations of scenes from "A Christmas Carol," this time for an edition published by Pocket Books in 1939.

This was among the first wave of the new-fangled paperback books published by Pocket Books through Simon and Schuster. They kind of caught on, didn't they?

Anyway, this edition of "A Christmas Carol" has just a handful of illustrations by Julian Brazelton, done in his typically appealing style:

I wish there were more!
