"A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong" (2017) - Part Two

If you got the chance to watch the BBC presentation of "A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong," I hope you found it as amusing as I did.

Derek Jacobi before things go wrong!

I thought it was clever how it started off like a legitimate production with Sir Derek Jacobi as Scrooge, then went off the rails, sort of like a Spike Jones record. You could probably trick someone if they didn't know!

You may recall that we heard Derek Jacobi in an audio adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" a while back, but he was narrating as Charles Dickens rather than playing Scrooge.

The Dame tells the Sir how it is!

The narrator here is Dame Diana Rigg (still lovely at 80-ish), who within the context of the show is the aunt of one the cast members, Sandra (I think!), played by Charlie Russell.

It's a little confusing to me, as the actors are playing fictional actors in the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society and there's a series of these takeoffs. There's some backstage "drama" dealing with the actors' personal lives mixed in, but I was able to follow along pretty well!

The cast does a good job of playing the comedy straight, if you will. They act like they're sincere about trying to put on a good show and never seem like they're intentionally sabotaging it.

I was especially amused by Jonathan Sayer as Dennis who can't remember his lines as Bob Cratchit and has them written all over the set.

Good fun and a surprisingly faithful adaptation.

As I said before, worth a watch!

"A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong" (2017) - Part One

"A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong" (2017)
Director: Richard Boden
Scrooge: Derek Jacobi

I've been aware of this BBC show for a while, but didn't get the chance to watch it until I saw it was available (with ads) on YouTube.

Here's the link if you wish to indulge:

Or if you're not sure, here's a snippet to give you a bit of an idea about the show:

I'll give you a chance to check it out, then discuss a bit. (SPOILER: I think it's worth a watch!)

"A Christmas Carol" - The Wireless Theatre Company (2016) - Part 2

A few thoughts on the audio dramatization of "A Christmas Carol" by the Wireless Theatre Company, as narrated by Sir Derek Jacobi as Charles Dickens.

If you have the Audible app and search for versions of "A Christmas Carol," you'll find a zillion of them, so I look for something distinctive, other than someone I'm not familiar with reading the text for three-plus hours.

So, audio dramas like this do catch my attention.

It's a nice listen, but nothing that will sway from my favorite audio versions, especially because it's just so long, clocking in at three hours and thirty-one minutes!

As such, some of the scenes drag a bit, as they're better read than sort of acted out in the form of exposit dialogue. Particularly, the descriptions of Christmas day sound strange when recited by the Ghost of Christmas Present (who's played by a woman, Miriam Margoyles).

This brings up what is the oddest thing of all to me It's that the script follows the book very closely, plot-wise, but is almost entirely paraphrased! I've seen/heard that sort of thing before and I'm not really sure what the point is, but, hey, it's something different!

There a a few minor changes here and there, such as some characters getting names, but there is one big twist!

This version has the not uncommon variation of Belle (with the last name "Granger" added) making an appearance at Fezziwig's Christmas party, but... she's presented as the would-be girlfriend of Dick Wilkins!

So, did the fiddler at the party have "The Tennessee Waltz" in  his songbook?

If you don't get the reference, Patti Page will explain it:

The whole production is well-done and Sir Derek Jacobi does a good job narrating as Charles Dickens. He's still no Edmund Gwenn, though!

"A Christmas Carol" - The Wireless Theatre Company (2016) - Part 1

"A Christmas Carol" (2016)
The Wireless Theatre Company
Scrooge: Kenneth Cranham
Director: Cherry Cookson

Always on the lookout for audio dramas, I gave a listen to this dramatization of "A Christmas Carol" from the Wireless Theatre Company. I think it's from 2016, but I'm not positive. It should be easier to figure that out, shouldn't it?

Scrooge is played by Kenneth Cranham, but the star power is provided by Sir Derek Jacobi who narrates as Charles Dickens.

You can find out more about it here:

If you have Audible and have three-and-a-half hours to spare as you recover from your New Year's celebration, give it a listen!
