How Did I Miss That?

OK, so with the amount of yammering I do about 1951's "Scrooge," you'd think I know everything about it!

Not quite!

The girls really want to hear that pudding!

While watching it again for the umpteenth time last night I noticed that when Peter Cratchit brings Tiny Tim to listen to the pudding "singing in the copper," he says, "You come too, Mary and Belinda!"

Mary is ready to chow down!

I knew the "small assorted Cratchits" did not include the non-Peter, non-Tim son, but how did I not notice that this version gives a name to the non-Martha, non-Belinda daughter?

Now I know!

OK, in the true spirit of randomness, here's a wacky card (I think) of the Cratchit Christmas dinner:

I don't remember where I got the image or what the context was, but... Fun!

The Christmas Books (1900?)

A while back (in this post) I had shared a cigarette card from a  series of "Characters from Dickens" as illustrated by Joseph Clayton Clarke, known professionally as "Kyd."

The only card from that series that featured a character from "A Christmas Carol" was number 35, which was Scrooge.

But... it turns out that image was taken from a larger set of Dickens characters from "The Christmas Books" which I think are from about 1900 and may have been published by Raphael Tuck & Sons.

Whatever the case, we have these six to enjoy:

The selection of characters is interesting. They seem to be the major male characters from the book (Marley having been male while alive) with Peter Cratchit having made the cut over Fred.

Peter looks a little crazy, perhaps overwhelmed by the honor?

And I do need to say that I think Tiny Tim looks like a short adult more than sickly child!

And is Bob's last name Cratchett?

But they're a lot of fun!

"A Christmas Carol" All-Star Team - Day 7

 

We now move into Christmas Present for our next All-Star Team members - Peter and Belinda Cratchit!

I put them together as in the book they share the same scenes and they kind of work as a team in my pick for the All-Star Team: Peter Miles and Janine Perreau from the 1954 adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" on the "Shower of Stars" TV series:

This production starring Fredric March as Scrooge has a lot going for it, including the scenes with the Cratchit family.

I think it's fun how Peter's sneaking bits of gingerbread while mashing the potatoes, which is not lost on Belinda, who keeps side-eyeing him!

Good fun and what makes it even better is that despite the different stage last names, they were brother and sister in real life too!
