Scrooge, or Marley's Ghost (1901) - Part 2

It's great to have those few minutes of "Scrooge, or Marley's Ghost" from 1901, as it really serves as a little window into the past.

This thing is old, to be sure, but it's still a movie and just to see something like this is fascinating.

The perspective of such things is always interesting. This move was made in 1901, which was 58 years after "A Christmas Carol" was originally published. And 1901 was 119 years ago, so we're more than twice as long removed time-wise from this movie as it is from the book! That alone is something!

There were definitely people in 1901 who had been around in 1843, so did anyone who read the book when it was first published also see this movie?

Anyway, what we have here is about half of what would have been a very condensed adaptation of the story.

I would have thought that having Marley's Ghost stand in for all of the spirits was to save time, but apparently that idea came from a popular stage version of the time. So, is this more of an adaptation of the show or the book?

There doesn't appear to be a ton of information about this film, but you can read a bit more at the British Film Institute's website by following this link:

Next, we'll talk about the content...
