"Scrooge Objects to Christmas" (1910)

"Scrooge Objects to Christmas" (1910)
Illustrator: Harry Furniss

Here's another old-school illustration from "A Christmas Carol," this one from a 1910 edition illustrated by Harry Furniss (1854-1925).

It's a montage from the first stave, with five things going on.

At the bottom we have the two gentlemen attempting to collect for charity - although only one seems portly.

Above that we see Bob Cratchit attempting to extract some heat from the small fire and Fred visiting Scrooge.

And the top right shows Londoners making their way through the fog.

But what's that in the top left? Apparently some "idiot" who made the mistake of going about with "Merry Christmas" on his lips and now has a stake of holly through his heart!

This is an awesome visualization of an abstract thought which makes me think of that "Old Scratch" illustration we were just looking at.

These artists had a sense of whimsy and their illustrations are still great!
