Meta!

I always like to have fun with something meta, such as this illustration:

How can Scrooge be reading "A Christmas Carol?"

Or is that not "A Christmas Carol" as we know it,  but another book with that title in Scrooge's fictional universe?

Or is that not really Scrooge?

It reminds me of the beginning of the "Shower of Stars" version where a gentleman purchases a copy of "A Christmas Carol" in a bookshop, then walks into the story.

Of course, I do realize that this is just a fun illustration, but it does raise questions!

The art is by Amber Duan and is from the Study Breaks website where it accompanies an essay by Angelica Rovinksi.

There's an interesting little nugget thrown in that I'll talk about next time...

The Doctor Is In!

Let's get really random with a Scrooge mention in the story "The Sargasso Ogre" from the October 1933 issue of "Doc Savage" magazine:

Interesting that author "Kenneth Robeson" (actually Lester Dent) thinks that Scrooge dreams about piles of treasure!

"The Sargasso Ogre" is a great story, first appearing with the Walter Baumhoffer cover art shown above!

I dig those original covers, but I'm more used to Doc looking like the James Bama version on the paperback reissues that I read as a kid:

Fun stuff!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

 Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I can imagine her saying, "It's St. Patrick's Day! I haven't missed it. The leprechauns have done it all in one night. They can do anything they like. Of course they can. Of course they can."

"Boys' Life" (December 1998)

Here's an cool illustration by Bill Cigliano for the December 1998 issue of "Boys' Life" magazine:

Not sure what's inside, but the characters we see on Scrooge's hat are intriguing, including the very Ann Rutherford-looking Ghost of Christmas Past!

Compare and contrast with the 1952 issue of "Boys' Life" we saw way back when!

Also Lurking!

Since we had an additional photo of Bransby Williams, we need another one of Lionel Barrymore:

Not dressed up as Scrooge, though!

That photo was featured on the back cover of this reissue LP:

Kind of a generic cover anyway, but the choice of Santa Claus is odd, as Santa does not figure in "A Christmas Carol" or any of the included Christmas carols!

It's like the design department said, "Christmas, eh? Here's a Santa image we can use for the cover." Thanks Marvin and Al!

Lurking About!

Bransby Williams always seems to be lurking about, doesn't he?

Here he is in character as Scrooge on this postcard from 1907:

Pretty neat!
